Why does the 6er sound terrible above 4k rpm? (took mufflers off vert)

I had Flowmaster American thunders on mine with an X pipe, and my GT friends would always say something like this "man, the FM AT's sound like crap on the 4.6, but on your 4.0 they sound pretty damn good".
Another way to deepen the exhaust note is to put a turbo on the car. LOL. I've also seen people put staggered resonator setups on the car to get rid of drone and rasp. I agree, its a good sounding six.
