Default Gear Install Checklist

Planning to throw on some 3.73s in the near future and just need a rundown on what I'm gonna need in order to do this. I know the 2 most important things of course.

http://www.evoperform.com/shop/index...ac752cf9b0287e

And of course a T-Lok

What else am I gonna need? Thanks in advance

Gear install kit, with carrier and pinion bearings, ring gear bolts, shims, loctite, crush sleeve, silicon for rear cover, etc.
And of course, 2 bottles of rear end fluid, and 4 oz. of friction modifier.

Hopefully you have someone to do this or know how to do it properly; it takes some special tools to do everything right or at least it really helps to have them (mainly a press for the bearings, proper-size bearing race drivers, dial gauge for measuring backlash, an inch-pound torque wrench for pinion preload).

Yea, this guy specializes in Gears/Differentials and is ASE certified. He's done 4.10s on a buddys Stang. Can you point me in the right direction of where to get the aforementioned kit? Where did you get yous Tx?

I've put in a few different kits, and got them from different places based on pricing at the time. One was american musle, that was for a 7.5 kit. I got the 8.8 kit from somewhere else. Prices vary A LOT, even week to week on the same site. Just shop around and get the kit that has what you need. I prefer the kits with Timken bearings, but the Toyo (?) ones are ok too, as that's what is stock in the 7.5s if I recall.

Sad thing is, I dont think I'll get blown anytime soon so a 7.5 is suffiecient enough for what I use my car for. Now, are the gears I posted legit? I heard about the "M" being for Motives which have gotten mixed reviews on here. I wanna do this right the first time and just wanna get my facts straight...

I Guess these are the same gear install kit, one of the says Timken tho. Which should I get? I just hit 60K miles

I found a Timken one

And the Motive one

Also, what type of gear oil do I need?

Let me see if I can offer and help, as I have 3.73s in my trunk, going for installation this weekend!

Gears you posted... "M" from what I have read mean Motive made. To my knowledge and extensive research, Ford no longer makes 3.73s for the 7.5 rear as FRPP. When Ford DID offer them, cost was about $289, quite a bit more than the Motives. Thus, I settled on the Motives from AM - and a little cheaper than what you had posted. Mixed reviews on the Motive brand gears - will have to wait and see (confident in my Ford 20+ years mechanic for the install).

T-lok - you can find that cheaper here, or contact AM and they will match the price (I like dealing with AM)

And the install kit of course...

And some oil...

I got my setup for $410, plus a deal on the install - make it much cheaper, although not as easy, as a new 8.8 with gears already there. I don't have any plans on going F/I either, so I am good with the 7.5.

That pretty much clears it up, I was considering and finally decided that I'm gonna end up using Motives... Thanks for all your help Retro! How much oil am I gonna need for this?

So, no problem. I believe you're going to need to order 2 bottles - will have left over, but 1 bottle won't be enough.

I will try to post up something Saturday after the drive back from installing the 3.73s and T-lok.
