Sport Mode? Shifting?
 

On a base model (deluxe) 2007 coupe with an automatic transmission, is there a sports mode?
also, for "manual" shifting, is there a clutch or is it like tiptronic where you "shift" gears (but the automatic transmission does the shifting for you)?

Mine has a button on the shift handle that turns off overdrive on an Auto trans, but I have the pony package and the V6 Safety and Security Package.

All the automatics will have overdrive, but i've never heard of a "sports mode". And no, there's not tiptronic transmission

What exactly is overdrive?
So then how exactly do I shift if there is no clutch? Can't I just move the shift handle from 1 to 2? Isn't that basically tiptronic?

Overdrive is a gearing arrangement within the transmission that steps the driveshaft rpms up above engine rpm. What that usually means is that you have a tall cruising gear that keeps the engine revs down. The OD in the 5R55S is 0.71:1, meaning that you get 2000 driveshaft rpm out of only 1420 engine rpm.

Although conventional automatic transmissions are getting a little smarter courtesy of electronic control, they aren't quite the same as a Tiptronic that gives you a selection of "modes" and (I think usually) a separate gate that lets you shift + or - one gear at a time.

IOW, there is exactly one fully automatic mode (where you shove the lever into "D" and let it go about its business) and exactly one manual shift mode (where you physically move the lever from position to position - there is no + and - one gear feature here). I suspect that it won't manually downshift anywhere near as well as a Tiptronic - you'll have to learn for yourself when and how much to kick the gas to manually downshift smoothly if the engine is at much above idle rpm. I can tell you that it is possible to learn this, but I will not guarantee that there won't be any side-effects over the long run.

Besides the sudden deceleration, though, it is safe to move the lever from 2 to 1 without braking or doing anything with a clutch (there is no clutch anyways, right?)
And its safe (won't hurt the car) to move the lever from 2 to 3 (or anything like that) while accelerating?
