Default Question about 3.73 or even 4.10 Gears...

I understand how they work, basically both wheels spinning for better traction and takeoff most people would say. But how do they perform in wet/ice conditions. I know when it rain and you try tacking off my wheels will just eat up and it sucks. But with both wheels spinning more times so to speak does this make the wet situations worse or improves the driving in these conditions?

the consensus around here is to go 4.10 for auto and 3.73 for manual...i have 3.73's and they are great...on another note, to get both wheels to spin you will need to get a t-lok or eaton posi...you will also need to get a rear-end rebuild kit, friction modifier and some would recommend a notched cross pin...with the wet weather you got to take it a little bit easier, if you are auto not so much....hope this helps

+1 3.73 auto
+1 3.73FI (future mod)
I generally take the truck when it snows. I have been caught in the rain a few times.
It took me be surprise when the left tire broke loose on a left turn. I certainly wasn't trying to do that. Just take it easy on those turns.

Maybe the question came bye the wrong way I understand everything that goes into it and personally I will be using 3.73. My questions was will there still be some concerns driving in wet weather with both wheels spinning together. I would think if a mustang can slip around normally in wet weather well adding something to make both wheels turn with double those concerns?

Just to clarify, but you'll need gears and a LSD (limited slip differential) to get both wheels to spin. And yes, putting power to both tires via LSD will allow the car to wag the rear if you get too greedy applying the power. But don't let that keep you from installing an LSD in your car with the gears.

As to whether or not 3.73's or 4.10's are better for a manual vs. auto, the forum opinions will vary quite a bit. I've had 4.10's in my old 2006 PP 4.0L coupe, and then put that rear under the wife's 2005 4.0L vert. It was a seemless change between the two cars, which were both naturally aspirated (I would recommend 3.73:1 gears if you're going FI, regardless of transmission). The transmissions in these cars are geared well and can handle shorter gears, unlike the old Muscle Cars from the 60's/70's that would wind out on the highway.

Don't fear the gear!
