The overall diameter will be .14 inches shorter, which is nothing. The revs per mile is only 4 off so speedo calibration really won't be needed.

According to the calculator in my link above the 235/55/17 is 27.18" and the 255/50/17 is 27.04" so .14 shorter, no problem.

ive seen a few pics of cars with 275/50/17 on the rears... is this safe?

I wouldn't push that at all, that seems way too wide for a 17x8 wheel.

Relavant topic as I'll have to replace mine soon as well. My experience on the PZeros is poor wet/rain traction as I've hydroplaned several times, very good dry and even good in snow.
