Default Axle help ASAP!!!?

hey guys i have been have some probs with the mustang the past few days, i pulled the wheels off to find that i can pull the axle about a 1/4 of an inch in and out, between that brake pads. i looked between the heat sheild and rotor and when you pull it out you can see a clean peice of metal, like its been behind the seal, not dirty like the exposed part, anyone know what it is? also when i make turns its rubbing really bad the pads catch it and rattle. i have 4.10's and a tlok if that helps?
thanks ahead of time yall!
Sam

It sounds like maybe one of the c-clips that retain the axle may be missing or has failed. The brake assembly may be the only thing retaining the axle. You need to get this looked at NOW. It's a potentially VERY dangerous situation...

Rear axles dont push and pull out 1/4".
Its either the C clip or the marriage ring.
Tow her to the stealership. ASAP.
I am cringing thinking you are driving her right now and
you are just about to loose an axle...
BAD NEWS...

What you are seeing behind the seal thats clean is called the rear axle bearing race.

Ya im not driving her, i know a fair amount bout cars and didnt seem right, called the place that did the axle and they said it was perfectly normal for an axle to have float. but idk about that, i put a new bottle of friction stuff in there and seems like the noise has stopped alot but im taking it to ford for a buddy to look at!
thanks for the input il keep yall posted on the news!

1/4" is way too much. If you check the other side, you'll probably have much less movement.
+1 on the C-clips inside the differential.

There's no truly polite way to say this, but your mechanic is a freakin' idiot. There is NO way a properly assembled and functional axle should have enough play to slip side to side constantly jamming the rotor into the brake disks. That's not "float", that's some seriously bad crap looking for a place to happen...

The side loads during cornering would 'float' the axle(s) into
the rear disc brake caliper/pad and thats just not right.
Mine has very little 'play'.

Mechanic is an idiot.
I wonder just what else is wrong but 'perfectly normal' in his eyes.
Scary...
