Default 05 V-6 automatic console part question???????

The piece of plastic around the shift, i guess maybe it is just a dust cover (that slides with the shifter) is broken and is binding inside the console. It's still driveable, but its hard to get in D. What is involved in replacing this piece. Anybody had the console apart before?
Can ya give me any pointers?

TIA!

ford will not sell that piece seperatly. I had the same issue. the wife decided to dump 1/2 a soda on the shifter and it started to bind up. wouldnt release to get out of park, had to fight to get it back into park. I talked to ford, and had to buy a new shifter assy. it was like 300 bucks. It was actually pretty easy to change, 4 bolts, the cable and a wire harness.

Thanks for the reply!
Well, that doesn't surprise me at all. Everything that has happened with this car since we bought it, has cost a bunch of money (just out of warranty). The fuel gauge quit working, they dont sell that separately, so it was a new instrument cluster at 700 bucks installed. An oxygen sensor went out-- Another bundle. More electronic issues which i wont go in to- more money. So the fact that Ford wont sell a 2 dollar piece of plastic (without buying the entire assembly at 300 bucks) doesn't leave me speechless. And the car only has 58K on the clock. This was our first Ford in years. I can safely say --IT WILL BE OUR LAST. I should have known better. The last Ford we had was ridiculous in the amount of money we spent keeping it running (T-bird). And i am **** about regularl service and maintenance! I am the kind of guy you would want to buy a car from. Regardless of how much she likes the car, you won't see our money going towards another one. Done with Ford.

thanks again for the reply, i really appreciate it!
sorry for the rant.........rant off.

Yes you would have to take the console apart. Take the shifter out. And then tear the shifter apart. You could probably take that plastic POS out and not replace it with an ything.

I probably could but i don't think it would look very good without a cover there (especially when i go to sell it-which may not be long). Any tips on getting the console apart? Does the trim ring on top just snap in?

taking the center consol out is pretty easy. and the trim around the shifter assy just pops out. one that is out of the way you will see the 4 bolts holding the shifter in. i think they are 8 or 10 mm but its been a year or so since i did mine. the cable has to be disconnected from under the car. i had mine on ramps and took about an hour to change.

Here's the console tear down. It's pretty simple. I've had mine apart. It still rattles when its cold though. Good luck with the junk yards.
