7.5 rear end and supercharging

7.5 rear end and supercharging
I've read several post recommending an upgrade or swap from a 7.5 read end to the larger 8.8 when adding a supercharger (whether it be a Vortech, X-Charger or Procharger). And I see the sense in having a beefier read end to support the increased torq that will be created. But what are the conditions that cause a 7.5 rear end to fail under the same load? If you stick with the 7.5 should you not go WOT? Are the breakages typically related to track/drag racing applications?
Unfortunately I'm in the position where I have already upgraded to 3.73 gears and added a trak-lok. Now I'm saving my pennies for an X-Charger. Just interested to know what NOT to do to break my rear end. But I seriously doubt I will be able to stay off the accelerator once I get an X. So what are my odds?

I have a 7.5" and an X-Charger w/ the Hipo and Wet-X options (the most potent version until the intercooler hits the streets). I have 25K with the "X" on it, and I've gone WOT a couple times (okay, a couple times a WEEK...)
The axle has held up fine. The one thing I don't do though is take the car to the track with sticky slicks. If that sort of duty is in the cards, then yeah, an 8.8 seems sensible. For normal duty (street, occasional track trips on street tires) the 7.5 should be ok.

I was debating the 8.8 rear a couple month back, but I wanted taller gears and tlok. I figured parts + install for gears, I may as well just go 8.8+gears+tlok. So I did, its in my garage now waiting for spring. Came out roughly the same price.

I don't see how you guys keep thinking it is about the same price. The only place I can get an 8.8 w/ 3.73's is NTO, and that plus shipping is like $1000 bucks, plus I have to install it.
I paid $700 for upgrading my 7.5 to 3.73's and a t-lok, that was out the door and professionally installed.
$300 difference, where are you all getting your 8.8's?

Personal choice I guess.
