This is true.. I am in this category.

OP: It is possible, but unless you are ready to invest deep money into your car, I stick with my original suggestion and go with the TCI ratchet shifter. It is what I did and I love it.

I did it, but i traded set ups with someone nearby who wanted to go auto. So i only had to pay for labor which was $450. Buying all the parts on your own isn't cost efficient and will come out to at least $2000.

1st. I bought mine with an auto for the same reason. I wanted a manual, but my wife isn't able to drive stick shift. And for the rare occasion she would have to drive it, I wanted it available to her.

2nd. If your dad bought the car that way for a reason, is he going to care if you change it?

3rd. The auto can shift faster than you.

4th. If you want to shift, be practical and put in a ratcheting shifter. Money wise that is your best option.

Nail hit on the head...

Trade it in for a stick and be miles ahead.
You dont know what you are messing with.
Its a 200* Mustang, not a 65'.
Tranny swaps are not what they used to be.

Sorta I guess...Same basic concept except the ratchet action makes sure you don't skip a gear..i.e.. There's no way to mistakenly double tap it up/down 2 gears since it has to return to it's resting position before you can shift again. They also have a reverse lockout so you can't get into reverse or park by accident.

Here's a vid of the tci street fighter...bunch more on youtube too if you wanna check 'em out.
