OWNERS MANUAL....
Call Ford and ask them suckas bout the mistaken 5th to 6th shifts
and the killed trannies as a result.
Speed or no speed, you are LOCKED OUT.
Wanna see the service manual showing how it works
and how it is assembled and how to troubleshoot
customer concerns like yours?
Haha oh wow I never knew that, maybe I need to sit down and read the owner's manual some day.

This happens to me a lot (randomly of course). I know it's the tranny because no other car I've ever had, and I've been driving manuals all my life (many, many different makes and models), and I've never had these problems before.

I do sit in neutral at a stop light or at a stop signs. It gets a little hazzardous at times when I'm trying to get it in gear either letting the clutch in and out or I find moving the shifter side to side in the neutral position several times helps it "get back into posistion" to slide into first.

Like others have said get it out of gear coing up to a light and then when the light changes push in the clutch and she should slip right in.

Anybody shift without the clutch? I used to be able to do it easily in the 79 F150 that I had. I have never tried it in the Stang yet.

Nah, I haven't tried it. My sister used to double clutching when she drove dump trucks. She said it helped her from getting leg fatigue.

My step dad knows how to do it in my car and he said you just have to listen for it, I'd rather not try.

Are not step dads great?
My volksywagon would speed shift from 2nd to third and 3rd to fourth
if the engine RPMs matched the trannys needs...

Mine does this sometimes after I park and try to put it in 1st. But, like others said, I just snag any gear I could get then go back to first.

do the shifters in the s197's have stop bolts, if so check them or screw them in so they don't contact the shifter handle, the stop bolts will prevent it from going into gear.

No stops on the OEM shifter.
Bent shifter forks from speed shifting are a plenty...
