I've noticed recently that I hear a squeaking noise from my engine bay when I'm at idle (stop ,stop sign, etc...). I further determined that it mostly occurs when I have the AC on or at least the fan. The car still appears to run fine but its annoying and I want to get it fixed. Anyone know what it's an indication of (wore belt, loose belt, failing compressor)? Anything else I should do to further isolate the actual problem? Thanks.
Its not the belt but the bearing on the belt TENSIONER
thats a squeeking. Replace it and the belt ForTheWin...
Is it the increased load on the belt tensioner beearing that causes the squeak because of the compressor being turned on? I wouldn't have guessed the tensioner because of the fact that it only occurs when the AC fan is running.
Looks relatively easy to replace the tensioner from the service manual. Is that really the case? Looks like a 10-15 min job.
Also, just to be on the safe side, check the thread about harmonic balancers.
I read the Harmonic Balancer thread but I don't think it applies to me. The chirpping I hear only occurs when the compressor is turned whether the engine is hot or cold. Also, I've had the ASP UDP installed for about 2 years now. But thanks for the heads up.
