Default might be a dumb question

so I just got my 1st stang. Ive been looking at mods and I keep seeing all this talk about tuners. What is it? What do they do? Do I need to replace the CAI? Ive been searching on google and cant find a str8 answer.... Can I just buy a tuner and do it myself, or do I need to find a local shop? How much does an average shop charge?
As you can prob tell I dont know much about cars....

Go scroll down the MF homepage and click tuners tad. Here there are prob 100's of threads which will answer your questions. Tuners: Our mustangs from the factory come with a consertive tune which caters to the needs of the daily driver, not the performance enthusiast. The factory tune is calibrated for stock components, while you start mod'ing your car with performance modifications, you need to recalibrate the vehicle's computer to realize the full potential that these modifications can achieve. Thus resulting in more torque and HP. The tuner itself can (just to name a few different items): clears troubling codes (such as o2 sensor if you go w/ a o/r midpipw) adjustment timing points, Raise Speed Limiter, Rev Limiter, Re-Calibrate Speedometer for Gear and Tire Size Changes, RPM Shift Points, adjustable via MPH, Cooling Fan ON/OFF Temperatures.

I would highly recomment purchasing a tuner/CAI combo from a reputable company, such as Brenspeed or American Muscle.

I purchased the SCT X3 tuner from Brenspeed and it comes with 3 custom tunes. The tunes vary according to the octane available in your area. (Example: 87, 89, 93)

When you purchase a tuner, to get the most gains you will need to provide them with your car specs and they will create 3 custom tunes specifically for your car.

You can install the CAI yourself and upload the tunes through your ODBII port under your dash. They are both very easy to install/upload.

CAI/Tune combo wakes up the stang and can add up to 25 HP. You will feel an instant change in throttle response and power!!! It makes the Stang a lot more enjoyable to drive!!!!

Anything else you need to know, let me know.

Hope this helps!

thanks kevin you answered a lot of my questions. So is the tuner pretty easy to use? Im also going to add dual exhaust, should I do the tune after, b4, or does it not matter?

It really doesn't matter. The dual exhaust mod is a cosmetic mod, little to no gain in performance.

Yes, the tuner is super easy to use!
Plug the SCT tuner into the ODBII port and follow the prompts on the tuner. You can also look on youtube and search for SCT tuner, and you will see a video on how to do it. Gotta love technology!

+1 regarding the dual exhaust...no special tune is needed for Dual exhaust.

Short and simple. Buy the SCT from American Muscle with free tunes for life. They can be updated as you update your car. Exhaust will give you some performance gain (I have the kit from AM) without a tune, but the exhaust and a CAI with a custom tune can really open your car up. Go get that tuner and exhaust now! haha
