hefty change

hey im a new kid on the block with a hand-me-down 2001 f-150 headed my way. i love the truck but the 5.4L does nothing but chug gas and it has 175,000 mi on it. im only 17 so my funds aren't too deep so i was hoping i could transition to an 05 v6. i could talk to some friends but nothing compares to people who have put 20,000+ miles on their mustangs. it should be cheaper to insure but i want to know the pros, cons and must haves from the daily drivers and any simple fixes and bang for the buck mods possible. at this point anything is helpful to me.

It's not a simple drop-in plus I'm not sure if your tranny is compatible. There are a lot of electronics to consider in addition to the changes you'll need in suspension to handle the added weight. It might be better to crate and sell the 5.4L and put that money towards a blower or sell the engine and the V6 for a GT since your costs to shoe-horn that 5.4 into your V6 will probably far exceed your current cost estimate.

I also believe that 5.4 is a SOHC?

maybe im blind but he never asked to put the 5.4 into the mustang....he is just asking general questions about an 05 v6 compared to the current ride which is a 2001 f150.

My bad. I think you're right... Nevermind.

Yeah, you guys had me scratching my head for a sec.... OP at your age I would guess it would be cheaper to insure a truck than a mustang. Also if you say, you're getting " a hand me down truck" I'm assuming that it's free. If you go to the 05 mustang would payments be involved?? I would think a free vehicle for a first vehicle makes better sense than being 17 yrs old and having a car payment.. just my two cents..

If the truck is FREE and reliable, then take it. Paying for gas shouldn't be as much as a car payment, but then again, I drive a V6, not a 5.4 V8.
Good luck with your choice!

I would say go for the mustang. I am 16, and the mustang is my first car, and it is a hell of one. A lot of fun to drive, and fun to mod. That is really the biggest con (the urge to spend alot of money on mods). Before you get the 05, you should look at the TSBs and make sure the one you want has addressed these issues, such as the water leak problem.

thanks for the responses and yes the f-150 would be free but im a city driver and the 4 door cab makes it really lengthy and hard to park. its pretty reliable but the whole thing creaks when you put it in gear (kind of scares me). according to KBB i can turn it around for 6k and my parents promised me another 2.5k for my first car. (total of $8,500) this puts me in the bottom range for some the 05 mustangs. i should be getting the truck in december so any money i can get between now and then can go towards the switch. besides i mainly drive an 09 camary i have to share with the family (whicich i rarely get)
