Question about bama tune.

Question about bama tune.
So a week ago I installed my CAI and loaded my 89 performance tune from AM. I had a tank of 87 due to some bad planning, and just now finished it off and got some 89. So basically, up until today I did not get to try out my new tune! Well, I found a nice remote spot and went to have some fun. I could definatly feel the difference. The only problem was, when I was in 3rd, my engine revvd really high and I heard it hit the limiter (it revvd and then stopped and then revved and stopped a few times) and hit 7K rpm so I let off. Can anyone tell me what that was about? I really know nothing about cars and will be the first to admit it, so can anyone help me understand what was happening? Don't critisize my ignorance, that is why I am here, to learn...

That definitely seems odd. I'd call and see what they say, maybe even try reloading the tune
From my experience with my 93 Bama tune it shifts really sharp right at redline but doesn't bounce on the limiter or anything
Are you sure you didn't have it in 3rd and not drive? That would account for it redlining and not going into 4th

It sounds like you simply bounced off the rev limiter a few times; nothing too abnormal. Have you checked what they set it at? When I first receieved my Brenspeed tunes, they set mine at 6800 which I immediately reset to 6500 RPM.
BTW, what IS the factory rev limiter setting for the 4.0?

I think factory rev limiter might be around 6000. I would avoid revving this motor much beyond this. Most of the 4.0 would probably be fine at 7000 RPM but I don't think the top end was designed for it.
Why was the engine revving up high when you were in 3rd gear? Were you spinning the tires? If not, you'd have to get goin like 90-100 mph to hit the rev limiter in 3rd. What were you doing??

I heard someone say that stock is like 6500 but don't call me on it.

The shift points should be at about 6500 in every gear, depending on what tune. If it went above that, I'd be curious as to why. You can always call Bama Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST at 888.226.9764 and they'll take a look into the tune file. If it was the 3-4 shift, maybe it just needs to be bumped down a mph or two at heavy throttle points. Load the tune in again, see if it does it again - if it does, call Bama, get it tweaked and enjoy!

Thanks for the response Chris! Once this happened I reloaded the tune and set my limiter at 6150 (I think). Didn't look to see where it was set before. The problem seems to have gone away, perhaps just the reload did it.
Anyways, the tune is great! My car feels totally different now! There is this nice straight road down past my school that is usually totally clear. Lots of people like to "race" there. I went up there a few nights ago and made sure to leave bits of my right tire behind (stupid open diff), hehe. Best 600 bucks I have ever or probably will ever spend. Thanks!
