As far as cost, if you shop around for used kits you can make some great buys on almost all of the superchargers. I almost hate to tell people how much my used Xcharger cost me. My basic kit I ended up only spending $850 and then another $1500 for the intercooler - but it was an exceptional deal. Someone needed to put his car back to stock but didn't have any of the stock parts left because they got tossed. So I swapped the stock parts plus the cost of uninstalling and shipping his Xcharger to me. I wanted the Xcharger and the deal was way too good to pass up!

And as far as reliability - the previous owner put 20,000 miles on it, and I've put another 90,000 on it. I changed the oil in it at about 90,000 miles on the unit. This past winter I disassembled it to check the coupler and it was still like new and no play in the rotors etc. So maintenance is easy, installation was easy, and it gets up to highway speed in no time.

Gosh this is hard I think I'll just end up going with whatever I can get the best deal on as far as x or vortec. And you both got crazy good deals I hope I can find one like that. Do you know anyone selling?! :P

Actually every once in awhile over on the Mustang Collective people with 4.0s sell their FI quite often. If either for a V8 swap or they are getting rid of the car. So keep your eye out! I have seen a few X-chargers recently and a turbo setup as well, not sure on their status now though!

And Jim, I didn't know you got that Xcharger for that damn cheap! You got lucky, and what a great scenario for you!

But Max, In the end its still a supercharged V6 Mustang so we all have something in common! And whatever kit/setup you go with you will have a blast regardless! If its either a Vortech beating up on X-chargers, or X-chargers trying to keep up with Vortechs its all fun!

I'm biased as well. The Vortec was a great setup for my 4.0. I'd like to see what a turbo is like as well. But a V8 is so much better of a platform to start from if you'll want a lot more power some day.
Still though, if I get another 4.0 someday, it'll get some form of FI!

^^ I lol'd JimC.

Just cause I don't take my car to the track doesn't mean I don't ever get on the throttle. Where I live there are plenty of long, straight roads with a view five miles down the road where you can see almost anything. I go put all the time and go ***** to the wall, but I'd like to go a little faster! Not to say I won't track my car because I know when I get supercharged the first thing I'll want to do is go to a track but the nearest one to me is a couple hours away.

Thanks for all the info on the x and the vortech! I appreciate it, I'll see what deals I can find and hopefully puck something up within the next month.
One more thing... How do these work in winter..? I unfortunately have to use my car in the winter. I'm looking for a beater car to use instead but haven't found one cheap enough. One of my buddies found a car a couple years ago for $300 and they put 100k on it already lol

They work fine, although Vortech doesn't recommend running a V2 in under 25 degrees because of the poor oil consistency upon startup. But a lot of people use theirs in sub zero temperatures and I have never heard of one failing from the cold. Plus, just go with the V3 (self contained, same as V2) if you do go with the Vortech. You won't have to worry about that and easier to install being you don't have to tap the timing chain cover or the oil sending unit.

If you want to troll go to OT.

OP, if you think that you will be happy with a supercharger/turbo charger and not want anymore HP later on then get FI. However, if you think you are going to get power hungry swap in a V8. After you go FI, there isn't a whole lot more to be done, although a pulley swap can get you quite a few more hor. ses. Eddie and Jim both have monsters using the 4.0, and running in the 12s at the track is pretty damn awesome. I would consider all of your options really well before you dump in the money.
