To be honest I do not recall seeing that type of tuner in our cars before. It might be possible, but yeah, we aren't really into those. As for the tuners we usually use, it is typically SCT, and the tunes are almost always through BAMA (American Muscle) or Brenspeed. I have a bama tune in my car, and my dad has a custom dyno tune written by Brenspeed. I honestly have not noticed a difference in how they perform, and they both use the handheld SCT tuner which is easy and quick to use. Buying a regular tune from Brenspeed would have yielded the same results, or so Chandler (guy at Brenspeed) told us. They are also both about the same price and the same products. Either way you go, for the CAI and tune, you will pay between 500 and 600 dollars most likely.

You can get a tune for any octane you want. And for the life of me, I don't know why ANYONE would want an economy tune. The V6 isn't that peppy to begin with. You'll be really disappointed with an economy tune. Even the 87 custom tune will run circles around the stock 87 tune and is equal in fuel consumption to the stock tune. At most you'll save only 1-2 MPG with an econo tune.
That being said, for your $1k:
That being said, for your $1k:
- CAI & tune (don't screw around. pick a good combo from AM. It's the tune that's the bulkof the power adder) ~ $600
- Exhaust ~ $400 ?
- Fuel (any change leftover put towards gas since you seem so worried about fuel economy. Better to drive like a granny and have power than BE granny)
Its comments like that, that really rub people the wrong way. I mean I want as much performance and MPG as I can get. Since your not concerned about gas go buy a big block and put a carb on it and spend a ton on gas because I just getting by as is gas going up just sucks.
I would put some cheap ebay shorty headers I got mine for 150. Then get a custom exhaust shop to put you a custom set up on. I have flowmaster 40's. I would suggest atleast 3 inch tips because the larger tips made my car sound much better. I would keep the stock cats, gutted or highflow cats. If you have to pass a smog inspection then you will have to spend a lot more on some JBA headers and they look and operate the same way.
The second thing I would do is definitly drop the money on a good tune and intake combo and the AM combos are good. Trust me once you throw a 93 race tune on there. You will never want to switch back the the 87 crap unless you have to

I bought for Ford CAI and SCT SF3 from AM. Great setup!
I asked for all 93 tunes. You get better mileage on a 93 with a 93 tune than an 87 octane with appropriate tune IMO.
There is a definite difference in exhaust sound, but I don’t know if that is more the CAI or the tune (I suspect it’s the tune).
