New to the Mustangs > 2006 V6 Clutch noises, normal or back to dealer?
Hi Guys,
I'm new to the Mustang world and just purchased a 2006 V6 last week with 30094 miles on it from a dealer in VA. I wants this car since it came out but as a non citizen the bank wouldn't say yay when I came to the US in 2007.
Let me throw in there that i have been driving stick shift since I was 18, pretty much standard in Austria. So I have 7 years of pedal to the floor 4 cylinders and 5 years of Ford (almost Mazda) Probe GT 2.5 V6 on my belt. Probably have driven 20 different cars over the years. They all drive a bit different, especially the clutch.
Here is what I encounter with that new Mustang and I wonder if thats just the way they are, since I only drove one so far:
- 1st thing i noticed > When I release the clutch pedal after a dead stop and start to drive in first, I hear 2 times out of 4 a slight grinding or higher pitched noise (not like a belt, more like a hummin, like blowing compressed air through a tube), it doesn't affect the operation of the clutch, but it worries me that something may not be up to par
- 2nd thing that is very appearant > Everytime I engage / disengage the clutch, wheter i shift or not, I hear a clank under the seat. I know whats happening down there, but I'm not sure if thats a sign of wear or if thats just the V6 clutch. I dont have that noticable 'clank' on any of the other cars I was / am driving.
I do have dealer warranty for another 2 weeks and 700 miles, I'm trying to get a feel if I should call them to pickup the car and check it out
Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to finishing a 12" fibgerglass enclosure for the trunk, the only mod alongside a rear spoiler (didnt have one) and bigger wheels
I love the look of this car and the power is ok for a V6
Now if I could stop worrying about the clutch / tranny I'd be one happy camper
Cheers, Juergen

My slave cylinder/throw out bearing went out at 65K miles and I had the whole clutch assembly replaced. I experienced a 2 inch dead spot at the top of the clutch pedal and I could barely get my stick shift into any gear. when pushing down on the clutch it did make a squeaky sound. However, once got the shifter in gear, the car drove strong and felt good. Unfortunately, it was so bad that I had to jam the shifter into every gear, hence I took it to a local shop to diagnose and fix it. I do not recall hearing any humming or clunking noises, except for when i shift into reverse (clunking sound), which is normal.
Since the car is under warranty, I would recommend taking the car back to the dealership and stress your concerns. Have them fully inspect, which will give you a peace of mind.
If you are interested in increasing your torque and HP, consider the SCT handheld tuner, CAI and custom tune combo kit. The combo kit really wakes up our sixxers and you will not be dissapointed!
Good luck and keep us posted!

Hi Kevin,
thanks for your input. I dont have any problems shifting into gears (though its a bit tougher
than on my Probe and on our Tacoma on 1st gear). I wish I could record the noise it makes
but the background noise in the car, maybe the GoPro will do the job.
I'm only a bit hesitant with the dealer since they are in VA, last time they picked up my car for
MD inspection they brought it back the same day, all good, but put on 120 miles. I'd like to
conserve miles for me to figure out things that may be wrong with the car.
I'm not planing on working on it too much, I have done alot on my Ford Probe (no choice
really, steering pump, timing belt + tensioner + pulley, wheel bearings, drive axles,
dristributor and coils, clutch slave + master cylinder and other 'surgeries')
I'll see if someone may have another hint to chip in and than call the dealer on Friday to
set an appointment for 1/29 to address my concerns
As far as performance, I dont plan to do too much too it but we'll see, maybe down the road
Right now I'm happy with addint a rear spoiler (from ebay, prepainted, arrived yesterday, color
is an exact match, cant beat it @ 120 bucks shipped, happy) and 18 inch take-offs from a 2012
GT (hope they'll clear the brake and inner fenders) plus of course I can't live withouth good sound
I'll post some pictures of my 2006 tonight, cheers

No problem!
You could possibly have a reputable local car shop take a look at it. When I purchased my Wife's SUV, I had Good Year inspect it to make sure everything was good. They charged me around $39.00.
As far as performance gain, you can get up to 15 more HP with the Cold Air Intake and custom tune combo. American Muscle and Brenspeed both offer combo kits and are very reputable companies. It entails replacing the stock airbox with a CAI and then plug the tuner into the ODBII port (under dash) and follow the instructions to upload the custom tune. It's just like downloading software onto a computer. Super easy!
In reference to the take off 2012 wheels, you shouldn't have any issues with the fitment.
A video maybe helpful.
Hopefully others will chime in.

Not that it sounds like the same issue, but my 2005 had the "Helicopter Clutch" issue as described in this TSB:

Just something to note should you start hearing that noise as well.
Good luck with the new 'Stang. 139K miles on my 2005... and I just two weeks ago had to replace the original battery.

Thanks for the input, that sound only happens on 1st gear @ take off from a stop, when I release the clutch pedal with just a slight amount of gas its fine (grandma take-off), but when I give it some gas for what i consider 'normal' take off speed, it makes the noise
We'll try to go pro the sound today when the snow melts away and i find a spot to attach it near under the car (most likely louder down there than in the car)

Hi Guys, i have not had a chance yet to have the dealer look at it. I did come across this youtube video today though, and that sound this guy has during shifts is what I'm hearing when accelerating from a stop and only under 1st gear:
I'll be back Thursday and than will have to call the dealer, any input on the sound above? Would help pleading my case to them

Girlfriend convinced me to get out there, here is the actual sound coming from my car, I'm ready for bed now, flight out of BWI in 8 hours
Clutch noise during acceleration from a dead stop, noticeable in 1st gear, at 0:01, 0:18, 0:23. Louder at 0:32, 0:41, recorded with GoPro Hero1 @ night
