Default 4.0 long crank/fuel smell

Hey yall, This motor is in my 03 Ranger SOHC but I've heard that it came in the V6 Mustangs as well. If I'm wrong, disregard, unless of course you can help me

I had a check engine light that came on about a month ago that threw an Evap code, but it cleared so I thought it was just the gas cap.

Just recently though, for about the past week, I've been experiencing a long crank (long being about 7 seconds) before she'll fire up. And when I pull in the driveway and cut her off, I can smell fuel. Is it possible I have loose plumbing going into my canister? Would this cause the fuel system to lose pressure and cause a long crank? Could this also explain the vapor smell?

I haven't noticed a decrease in power, or a stutter under load, it's only when I start the truck that it's odd and when I step out I can smell the fuel.

Check the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Take a pair of vice grips and squeeze off the line and see if it starts easier. I'd start there. The fuel smell makes me think there. You don't have any codes showing do you? Also, clean your MAF sensor. Use Air Intake cleaner for the best result and least amount of excess residue left over. Good luck, and keep us posted on your findings.
