Cold air intake/ fuel consumption

OK this is very strange! 7 years ago I bought and 07 Mustang v6, one of the first mods I did was install a k&N cold air intake that doesn't require a tune which I've had ever since keeping it clean and every time I went for my maintenance for life, and I never paid attention until late recently, my car was suffering from poor acceleration and very bad fuel consumption I would get if I was lucky 175 miles a full tank city 190 if did highway, which seemed odd to me I tried checking everything so find out why was I losing acceleration and getting very bad gas milage I did ful fuel injection cleaning service and still no luck 2 weeks ago I was cleaning out the garage and I found my stock intake, so I was like what the hell I'll let me try test a theory, so I went over to ford and picked up a filter and went home and install my stock intake back on, and after a few days I gained back my acceleration, my car feel faster, and now I'm getting 240 miles on a full tank of gas, what the hell I am so confused I thought It should be the other way around. I have no idea why? could someone help me out ? I find it strange

Probably because your "no tune required" CAI actually needed a tune. Nevermind that it was a waste of money on a poor-breathing engine like the 4.0 anyway.

air intake on a 4.0? may as well buy a turbonator

"A poor breathing engine like the 4.0"? Never heard that before, but agree, it probably needed a tune. BTW, I get just over 300 miles on a tank consistently.

the 4.0 is a truck engine, originally meant for the Explorer and Ranger. It was dropped into the Mustang because they had no other V6 to use at the time. it's a low-revving, wheezy boat anchor.

the v6 of today makes the same hp and tq as your 03 v8 so i guess todays v6 owners should throw your turd v8 under the bus just the same,, not bias just facts....

Really... if you don't have anything good to say, why not hang out with the other cool kids in the V8 forum. Personally, my nicely tuned v6 suits me just fine.
