The cobras and GT's can use a 275-35-18 in the front with the proper wheel fitment.

dumb question I'm sure, but what does the proper wheel fitment exactly mean. The wheels I want are 18x9.5 with a 35mm offset on a 2004 GT. Also I was talking to one of my boys about it and he made it sound like putting 275's on the front would slow my car down a lot and also effect my handling and cornering in a bad way...Any thoughts??

What I mean by proper wheel fitment is that the wheel is the correct width and offset.

A 18 x 9 with an offset of 24-28 would be the best fit for a 275/35-18 in the front.

If you increase the unsprung weight it will have some effect on acceleration. Larger wheels and tires will change the way the car handles. The steering may not be as precise but you would have better lateral stability during cornering. The car may also tramline more.
