OK..... not making sense here..
The '77 Mustang did not run a 205/40/17", it ran a 195/70/13". Are you now wanting to install the 205/40 on the '77 Stang you had.... huh?
The 195/70/13" tire = 23.7" diameter
The 205/40/17" tire = 23.5" diameter
Any car that will run one size tire, will run the other without any issues whatever. Now the bolt pattern and off-set of the wheel itself are going to be a completely different matter!
