Biggest tires I can fit on these wheels? and Tire recommendations
I have a 93 5.0 LX with what I think are wheels off a 2000 mustang GT which are 17x8s.

I currently have Kumho ECSTA in 245/45/17s and they SUCK, I have a 5.0 with minor bolt ons and 1st and 2nd are useless. I know its cold out (i'm from NC) but I want something that can get power to the ground.
I'm looking for just rears right now, the fronts are fine looking to stay under 400$ ifpossible.
Can I get some recommendations?
Also whats the biggest size I can fit on that rim without rubbing or with just minor rubbing?
thanks a lot, excuse my noobness but i'm coming from the Jeep world.

I would expect the Kumho ECSTA to be a nice tire, but designed for lateral grip, not from a dig. I am willing to bet the temps are a factor as well and will probably limit your choices as well.
It appears you have a 17"x9" wheel in the linked pic. In such a case, you are looking at a 275 max for a proper fit. If you are looking for improved grip off the line, I recommend you get a set of smaller diameter wheels for a bit more profile with a set of DR's. The issue you may have is the temperature of your area. I am not familiar with NC, except that it can get cold there.
What are your Summers like and how long do you have 60°+ temps?

Its been in the 30's lately so that hasn't helped. Normally its above 60 degrees for most of the year so thats a plus.
I was looking at the nitto 555 nts or nitto 555 drag radials in the 275/40/17 flavor.
I would assume those would allow me to launch and keep traction in 1st and 2nd according to the reviews.
I have Steeda springs and their stiff, think that has anything to do?
thanks,
Jake

If you are running an 8" wheel, even a 265 is too much tire and will not benefit from its extra width
I would not be running around in an "R" comp with sub-freezing temps! You bring such compound down to freezing, you will destroy the tires. You are pretty much SOL for anthing that will really grab in your conditions, so you may want to move out to Cali to run them "R" comps all year round
As for stiff springs, yes.... they will certainly contribute to poor grip. What suspension mods have you done to your ride? Some things will certainly help, but cold temps and an A/S tire are not going to be much of it, I'm afraid
