This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 (2005-2014).

The seat belt chimes are there to remind you to buckle up and be safe, and that's a good thing. But we're all adults here, and maybe we don't need the doorbell ringing for five minutes when are we just driving across a parking lot. The good news is there is a way to disable them in your Ford Mustang, and this article will guide you through the process step-by-step.

Material Needed

  • None

Step 1 – Perform preparation steps

  • First, you will need to set the parking brake.
  • Put the car in park if it's an automatic, or neutral for a manual transmission.
  • Turn the ignition to the OFF position.
  • Close all the doors.
  • Unbuckle the driver's and passenger's safety belts.
  • Turn the headlights to the OFF position.

Step 2 – Turn the ignition

Set it to the RUN position.

Step 3 – Wait for the safety belt indicator to go off

This should take about one minute, so be patient..

Figure 2. Wait for the seat belt light to go out.

Step 4 – Buckle and unbuckle the belt

Buckle and unbuckle the seat belt nine times. Keep in mind that you have 60 seconds to complete this and the next step. Do this step for whichever belt you would like to enable or disable. Be sure to end with the belt unbuckled. At this point, the airbag warning indicator should light up for three seconds. Proceed to Step 5.

Step 5 – Buckle and unbuckle once more

Once the airbag light goes off, buckle and unbuckle on more time. This will enable the seat belt chimes if disabled.

Step 6 – Watch for the beltminder confirmation

You will know it is enabled when the airbag warning indicator flashes four times per second for three seconds, followed by three seconds again. Confirmation of it being disabled is just the flashing four times per second for three seconds without the three second follow-up.

A few notes about this process:

  • Steps 2-6 using only the driver's safety belt will permanently enable/disable the beltminder feature.
  • Steps 2-6 using only the passenger's safety belt will permanently enable/disable the beltminder feature.
  • Only one side can be enabled or disabled per ignition switch cycle. While programming the driver's side, any activity on the passenger's side will terminate the programming sequence. Likewise, any activity on the driver's side while programming the passenger's side will terminate the programming sequence.
  • The programming sequence will also terminate if a system fault occurs that requires the illumination of the safety belt or airbag warning indicator at any time during the programming or confirmation.
