Ford Mustang V6 and GT 2005-2014: How to Replace Fuel Pump

After years of use, replacing your fuel pump might become necessary due to wear and tear, or new fuel volume requirements due to modifications. Find out how to replace your fuel pump in the article below!

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and GT (2005-2014).

Your fuel pump is basically responsible for taking fuel from the gas tank and pumping it down the fuel lines into the engine's fuel lines as well as injectors. With a faulty fuel pump, your entire system becomes useless, since fuel is unable to be transferred from the tank to the engine. Common symptoms include hard-starts, loss of power, and high rpm sputtering. After the fuel pump is replaced, you will regain power and reliability. If your car is modified and demands an aftermarket fuel pump, then check for the manufacturer's instructions to make sure that the procedure is the same. Follow the instructions below and be back on the road in no time!

Materials Needed

  • Fuel pressure bleeder
  • Bucket or gas tank
  • 8mm wrench
  • Brass bunch and hammer
  • Flat screwdriver

Step 1 – Bleed off fuel pressure

Locate the bleeder valve shown in Figure 1 and attach a fuel pressure bleeder system into a bucket or gas tank to bleed off fuel pressure. Once the pressure is bled off, you can disconnect the negative (black) terminal of the battery by loosening the 8mm nut.

  • Figure 2. Disconnecting battery.

Pro Tip

Be careful when removing the bleeder valve, as fuel will start to spew out if the hose or bleeder is not connected.

Step 2 – Remove rear seat and access fuel pump

Remove the rear seat cushion by unsnapping it from the bottom of the seat frame as shown in Figure 3. Remove the rubber dust cover on the fuel pump by prying up on it and setting it aside.

  • Figure 4. Removing dust cover.

Pro Tip

Do not allow anything to fall in between the chassis and gas tank.

Step 3 – Prepare to remove fuel pump

Use a flat screwdriver and unlock the fuel pump connector by pushing the red tab back and pulling the connector off. Then, remove the fuel line connector by pushing in the green tab and pulling back. Be prepared to catch some fuel that is trapped in the line. Now, the locking ring has to be spun counterclockwise to release the fuel pump from the gas tank. Use a hammer and a brass punch to spin the locking ring as shown in Figure 7.

  • Figure 6. Fuel line removal.
  • Figure 7. Removing locking ring.

Pro Tip

Try not to damage the locking ring so it can be re-used.

Step 4 – Remove fuel pump

Thoroughly clean the area around the fuel pump before removal to ensure no dirt gets in the fuel tank. Now, carefully pull up on the fuel pump but do not remove all of the way, as the crossover fuel line tube is still connected. This is removed in the same fashion as the fuel line on top of the fuel pump. The location of this tube is in Figure 8. Now, the fuel pump is ready to come out. Be careful as you maneuver it out and be ready to catch some fuel that is on the fuel pump body.

Step 5 – Install new fuel pump

Install the new fuel pump in the reversal of the steps above. Make sure the fuel lines "click" in and everything seats properly. Inspect your tank seal and replace if needed. Re-install your dust cover, seat cushion, and connect your battery. That's it! You now have a reliable Mustang again!

Pro Tip

Clean all surfaces and seals that are re-used to ensure that no leaks occur.
