This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (1994-2004).

As a safe driver, it's important to always have properly functioning airbags installed in your 1994 to 2004 Ford Mustang. If your airbags become faulty for any reason, the airbag warning light will illuminate on your dashboard, indicating that there is a problem that requires professional attention. It's important to act immediately whenever the warning light appears on your dashboard to ensure your safety while operating your car. If your airbags are not faulty but the warning light itself is malfunctioning, you can turn it off. However, it's highly recommended that you have your airbags checked before simply turning off the airbag warning light, particularly if it remains on while you drive.

Materials Needed

  • 10mm socket and ratcheting wrench
  • Paper clip

Step 1 – Remove your battery

Crack out your socket wrench in order to remove your battery by disconnecting the two nuts that connect the positive and negative terminals on the top of the battery. Remove the connectors and pull out your battery. Wait 15 minutes, and then reinstall your battery. Take your car for a short drive. The warning light should be absent from your dashboard. If it's not, the issue could be a faulty fuse (the one that goes into the actual airbag harness or the one that connects to your fuse box), or a problem with the way your airbag(s) is housed in your vehicle.

Step 2 – Remove the warning light

If the warning light blinks five times, pauses, and then blinks two additional times, then the car is giving the trouble code 52. (Your ignition will need to be on at this point.) Look under your glove box for a grey connector with black/brown and red wires connected to it. Turn the connector over, so the back end is facing you; this is the end from which the black/brown and red wires protrude. Jump or boost both wires simultaneously using an open paper clip. Listen for a beeping sound. Once this sound is heard, let go of the connector and turn on the ignition. The warning light should no longer be visible on your dashboard.

Step 3 – Visit your local Ford dealership

Before turning off the airbag warning light in your Ford Mustang, it's highly recommended that you visit your local Ford dealership. Have your dealer inspect your entire airbag system, including your fuses and modules. The issue could be a bad fuse, a malfunctioning system, or worse. Once your vehicle is cleared for any safety issues, your Ford dealer will remove the warning light and explain what additional maintenance may be required.
