Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT 1994-2014: How to Adjust Headlights

Adjusting the headlights on your Ford Mustang will increase visibility on the road at night.

This article applies to the Ford Mustang V6 and Mustang GT (1994-2014).

If your headlights point too far to the ground or in some other direction than where they should be pointed for optimum visibility at night, you'll need to adjust them. You'll notice we didn't say you'll need to "have them adjusted." The reason why is simple: this is one repair you can easily and quickly complete on your own right from the comfort of your own home garage. Because you won't need the help of an expensive mechanic, you can use the money you are going to save completing this project on your own to pay for that interior or exterior modification that you've been dreaming of. Like we said, the process is easy and fast, so let's get started!

Material Needed

  • Phillips screwdriver

Step 1 – Adjust Hex bolts on the assembly

  • With your Ford Mustang parked 25 feet in front of a white wall or garage door, pop the hood of your car.
  • Adjust the Hex screws on your driver's side headlight housing assembly using a Phillip's screwdriver.
  • Doing so will allow you to adjust the positioning of your driver's side headlight beam to your desired angle.
  • The bolts are located along the top of the housing assembly, as depicted below.
  • Each assembly contains two bolts.
  • The assembly is housed under the hood of your car, where your engine and other components are located; the bolts cannot be accessed unless you pop the hood of your car.

Step 2 – Find the best angle

  • Turn the bolts in a clockwise direction to achieve an upward facing angle; do the reverse to achieve a downward facing angle.
  • Adjust your driver's side and passenger's side headlights until they are even, which you can measure by either posting a piece of tape to your garage door or checking for evenness visually.
  • Adjust either side as needed until both sides are adjusted (or appear even on the surface you are using).

Pro Tip

If you need to adjust either headlight going side-to-side (known as a horizontal alignment), adjust the bolt located near the corner of your headlight accordingly. Otherwise, it won't be necessary to make any adjustments to this bolt using your Phillip's screwdriver.

Step 3 – Gain more visibility on the road

  • If you are not satisfied with the quality of your headlights, it's recommended that you switch to HIDs.
  • Conversion kits are available for as low as $35 online or through an auto parts store.
  • Many Ford Mustang owners prefer HIDs over stock headlamps due to the former's increased visibility and added lifespan.
