Rental Car Door Molding

Rental Car Door Molding
I just bought my first Mustang -- a 2006 4.0 that sadly has the rental/lease door protectors.
I've read that the molding can be removed (heat+fishing line+adhesive remover+elbow grease), but I'm concerned that the paint will be a very different color underneath because the car has always been driven in Arizona and has seen more than its share of sunlight.
The molding is very faded, however, so I have to do something about it. I'm considering black Plasti Dip on the molding, but I can't find any example images in which people painted the molding any color other than to match the car. My car is silver and has the black decals above the rockers, and I'm planning to spray the wheels black and use black for other cosmetic modifications.
Thoughts on how it will look? Should I just take the risk with removal and having mistinted paint on the doors?

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your car. Yes, unfortunately when you take that molding off more than likely you will have a ghost stripe. You can do a search to see what some members did as far as stripes to cover it.
I have seen on You-Tube where a guy used a heat gun to bring back the color on moldings but they were greyish black.
Do you have a photo of your car?

I can't imagine it would be THAT much different even if it was slightly noticeable. I think if it were me the old faded molding would be more of an eyesore than a slight difference in color anyway.
Assuming the clear coat is still in tact, and it should be, you should be able to polish the surrounding area to at the very least fade it in a little. If the clear coat is oxidized to a point where there's a big difference, it's all the more reason to completely polish the whole car the car to bring back the shine.
