So, I FINALLY got the problem fixed! My normal Ford dealership was closed, so I had to take it to Woodfield Ford in Schaumburg, IL. Luckily, they had seen the problem before - and they're trying to get Ford to issue a TSB about this as it is common. So, here is the solution - and if anyone else has a problem, tell them to call Woodfield Ford in IL - 847 882 5031 - they've fixed the problem before, and did it again with me!

EDIT: the problem was the spacer plate between engine and transmission contacting the back of the engine - print the following out and give it to your dealer if need be!

Thanks for the tip! I'll be doing this first http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showpo...mp;postcount=7 , before dropping the transmission. My car is out of warranty so I'm on my own. Also, on the invoice you have, it says "remove plate and off metal section that was making contact". It looks like there might be some words missing - "remove plate and off metal"?
I went the spacer route (one thin metal washer, one thin rubber washer), and it completely eliminated the noise.

This sound promising! I'm hoping this is the problem onmy 05too. The dealer suggested this last week, now they are waiting for the plate to come in from Ford. They had already replaced the cats, been though the rest of the exhaust system and it definitely wasn't a ping noise. Anyway I gotthis in under the warranty expiring so I'm going to let them keep working on it, on thier dime, till they fix it. It goes in next weekI'll let you know how it goes.

This may explain the pinging issues I thought I was having with my tunes. Can anyone post a picture or drawing that's not quite so zoomed in as the ones above? Also, MTAS, was it difficult to get to those bolts with a socket? What did you use?
