Backfiring in exahust from brand new '08 Mustang GT
I finally got my '08 Mustang GT premium coupe on Thursday! I LOVE it!!! One thing tho, there's alot of poppingin the exhaust when I either rev it in neutral or sometimes when I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd. I'm trying to break her in easy so I'm basically keeping the RPM's at 3000 and below. Anyone have ideas on why this is happening? Is it because its new, or is this something that I need to get looked at?

I'm sure what your hear is just the exhaust burbling as its coming down from 2500-3000 rpm. If you can feel it then its probably a backfire and wouldn't hurt to get checked out. What was your last car? You probably think its backfiring because your old car didn't burble?

Well, this is my first performance type car. Definitely my first muscle car. I don't feel it when it's doing it, I just hear it. I'll try letting her warm up first and see if it still does it.

Yeah.. it's normal and nothing to worry about. Old school hotrodders call it "bopping". There is a reason for it that was explained to me once, but I really don't quite recall exactly why it is... Not harmful at all, and sounds pretty cool IMO.

It's normal on anything with a free flowing exhaust. What's happening is when you let off the ignition system is igniting residual fuel that is left in the combustion chambers. Much different than an actual backfire. A backfire literally sounds like a gun firing but louder than some guns. A backfire is pretty much a thing of the past with modern engine controls. If it does actually backfire there is something very wrong with ignition timing, but what you're describing is perfectly normal for any vehicle that has a low restriction exhaust system. Nothing to worry about. Enjoy the car!
