Cooler thermostat for an S197
Hey, all - got an 08 Gt on order and am interested in a cooler thermostat than factory.
Currently driving a 98 Camaro w/ a 160 thermostat that does real well in this HOT
Texas weather. Keeps her real cool.
Yes, I know the drag race boys will howl at a cooler thermostat - (heretic !!!!)(burn the witch!)
but I'm not looking to drag race an F-16 till takeoff ... just had really good results keeping my
Camaro cool and would like to duplicate with the new Ford Baby.
Any links to product would be awesome -
My love to you all!

I was under the impression that a thermostat was a thermostat. When it reches it's designed opening temperature, it opens. If you have a thermostat that opens at a lower temperature, the engine coolant will begin circulating through the radiator at a cooler temperature, keeping the engine cooler. Unless they did away with the thermostat and use an automated electrical flap.
To answer your question, I don't know. It's possible that they do. However, the engine was designed to run at a certain temperature, changing the thermostat to amke it run cooler may have some negative effects. However, if you are supercharged or have a turbo, a lower operating temp should result in less knock (detonation).

Once the thermostat opens the cooling systems of both of our hypothetical cars are wide open.
The ability to "cool" is governed by the size of the radiator and the amount of air passing through the radiator. The 160 stat imparts no cooling, it merely opened sooner. Once you `ve passed 160, or 180, or 210, (makes NO difference) all systems are wide open and can only dissipate (shed) heat through the rad. So, when it`s 110 degrees in Texas ( or B.F. Egypt for that matter)both cars will eventuallyrun at the same temp. Shard is entirely correct. The above reference to open/closed loop has to do with fuel injection/emissions parameters and does not effect circulation in the cooling system
Keep in mind that changing the thermostat does not lower the preset temp at which the fans kick on

Lightning thermostats have a 180 degree setting. I installed one in my 07 GT and was datalogging the temperature - it never got over 189.

I don't think it'll do squat except take longer to reach operating temperature on those cooler days (and our Stangs already take longer than most vehicles to reach operating temperature). Hell, you don't even have the car yet... Don't mess with it unless you think the stock thermostat isn't cutting it for you.
