Default Can Tires Be 2 Sizes Bigger Than Rims?

Hey guys,

I am shopping for new tires and I was talking to the sales guy at Discount Tire. He mentioned that I can go 2 sizes larger than the rims and be fine in terms of the tire....can someone confirm this for sure?

I have never heard of this, so I wanted to double check before I purchased new tires. My rims are 18 x 8.5, so he said the tires could be 2 sizes bigger and give me more traction.

Is this true? I need to know for sure, 100% sure before I make this purchase.

Thanks in advanced,

Nick

What did he mean by 2 sizes bigger? As in, if you have 235's you can to 255's? Best thing to do is to go the tire manufacturer's website or tirerack and see what the rim width range is for various tires.

Ideally you don't want the tread width to be wider than rim width. If you go bigger, you will likely wear the center of the tires quickly.

he means +2 which is a common phrase in the tire biz for going up two inches in wheel diameter

huh?

i wouldn't do wider than 255 on your rims if they're still stock.

really depends on the tire and the size. a 275/45/18 works well on a 8.5. I run 255/45 front and 265/40 (MT DR) rear... works well

my rears are 9" and i run 305,35r20s and it looks hot as hell. no apparent problems with the middle wearing odd or anything, but i did have to put different springs in the back (had ford racing) cuz the car sat too low and JUST BARELY rubbed the outer part of the tires

I have 265's on an 8.5 inch wide rim and no issues and it looks great IMO!

Tire Rack shows a Rim width range of 8.5" - 10.5" for those few Tire Companies that make a 275/45/18 tire size.
