Default 2010 Mustang GT vs. 2010 Dodge Challenger

Hey everyone,

It seems we keep pitting the Mustang against the new contenders. While it's still debatable whether or not the new Mustang is a welcome change, what do you think of it in comparison to the "challengers" (pardon the pun)?

Still staying Mustang? Does that SRT8 have you intrigued enough to jump ship? Is Al Bundy still a relevant reference? Have at it, guys.

I think the new Challenger is awesome. I'd love to have one as a second car.

I test drove a SRT last week. I started a thread in in the off topic section. I wanted to test drive a R/T since it is in the GT range. From what I read, our GTs would probably win in the acceleration test. The problem is the Challenger's mass. It weighs a lot but I do think it looks good. You'd have to jump into an SRT to beat a GT but I don't think it would win by much. Howerver, the SRT price range is in GT500 and corvette territory. A vette will smoke the SRT I think. Sadly, I have not had a chance to drive or ride in a GT500 to compare.

I was actually convinced I wanted to get a Challenger R/T for my next car... until the 2010 Mustang came out and then that all changed. But they are still very sexy cars. I see them on the road here in Michigan occasionally. I'd definitely love to have one if I could afford two new cars. There's this Hemi Orange SRT8 at a Dodge dealership near me that looks especially sexy.

i do like the challengers looks, but then when it comes down to it, its pretty big and heavy, and when i sat in one at the autoshow that was equipped with a manual, it felt HORRIBLE! it was the worst feeling shifter i ever felt

I seen a couple of challengers most in SRT and one in RT!! No v6's yet!!
Went up to a orange SRT and it was really nice but it was HUGE!!
I mean i thought the 05+ Mustangs were a little huge at first but compared to the new challengers it looks so tiny!!

I like the new challanger but I wouldn't want to choose between my cobra or an srt8.
The only srt8 I've seen so far there was some old guy in it putting around like any other old guy in a corvette it was actually annoying.

At 3500 pounds the GT isn't exactly a lightweight either. The R/T doesn't weigh much more and it has another 75 crank hp. It's a close race between the two.

I thought the R/T's were still close to 4000lbs. Either way, it still has a slightly better hp/weight ratio than a GT.

A manual GT does not weight 3356, they're closer to 3450-3500. That looks like the weight of a V6.

I'm just relaying the info from here: http://autos.yahoo.com/2009_ford_mus...m_coupe-specs/

Those are the specs listed for a 2009 Mustang GT Premium coupe

Right on both counts. I thought it was closer to 3800 pounds but it's not.

kbb.com lists curb weight for a 2010 premium GT at 3483lbs.

The real problem for the Challenger is the Camaro. For $30k Chevy has a 422hp car that will probably outperform and outhandle a $42k SRT8.

Not good for the Challenger.

And I don't even know how Ford can justify a $50k Mustang Cobra. It looks sweet and all, but I'd pocket the $20k and go with the Camaro SS. Ford needs something to compete with the Camaro, let's hope the 5.0L V8 does the trick.

/agree

The cobra is overpriced. I looked on autotrader yesterday and most people still want 40K plus even for lightly used ones.

I disagree. I sat in an R/T and I thought the shifter felt really good, as well as the clutch.

Although I agree, the Camaro is the bargain, your facts are a little slanted. For closer to $31k, you get the zero-optioned, 400hp auto version of the SS.
