Default Is my friend lieing to me??

well i talked to my friend who owns a shop and has worked on my car before. I told him i had a mod list that i wanted to buy. I told him i was thinking of getting 255/45/18 front and 305/45/18 rear.(don't know what brand to go with yet). He told me it would stick out and it wouldn't look good. I've seen some pics here with that size and to me it looks sexy as hell! lol. I also told him that i wanted to get a set of comp cams ***** thumprs and he told me not to get them because it wouldn't give me any gains. One last thing that we talked about was gears. I'm between 3.73s and 4.10s just like everyone else in this forum. lol. ok so he told me to get 4.10s but i live in a place where i do a lot of highway driving and i don't wanna be drving at 3000 or more rpms. I know that if i use a bigger tire in the back it will make the 4.10s feel like 3.90s or maybe even 3.73s. I trust him but i want to make sure i get the right stuff for my baby. lol. oh yeah and it will be a DD with the occasional trip to the track.I'll be buying lca/uca, struts and shocks, aluminum DS, twin disc clutch, aluminum flywheel, same size brakes but drill and slotted with hawk brake pads, stainless steel brake hoses, hurst short shifter, rear swaybar, lowering springs, and maybe bullet deep dish wheels or the saleen 5 spoke wheel. If anyone out there has done this set up or have experienced anything like it please help. thanks

The tires are all up to you. What look your trying to achieve, etc. That will be a real meaty / muscular look. The comp cams are actually known for the best gains, some gain upwards of 30rwhp. And the gears, i would also suggest 4.10s. Im at 2500 rpms at 70mph, close to 3000rpms at 80.

as far as the wheels and tires you'll be ok as long as you get the right offset. the offset of the wheel determines whether or not the wheel sticks out. with the right offset you can run a 305 rear no problem, wrong offset and you'll have trouble with a 255. basically get the wheels and tires from one of the vendors on here and you'll know for sure they'll fit right

as far fas the rear end I'm personally keeping my factory 3.55 rear. once I add the Kenne Bell I'll have plenty of power to pull through the gears and I'd rather leave the gearing a little taller for highway use like you mentioned and to make sure I hold traction off the line with the boost. my buddy had 3.73's on his 04 GT and those were good too, not a huge difference from the 3.55's.

I honestly don't think it makes as much of a performance difference as people make it out to be. you're just going through the gears quicker so it 'feels' faster. I've seen lots of guys so far with different rear ends running similar times from the stock 3.31's to 4.11's. it would be interesting for a magazine to take the same stock car and run it with 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, and 4.11 rear ends and log everything. then maybe do the same thing with a boosted car and see if the differences were the same. that's a lot of work though

yeah i wanna get that retro look. if u look at my albums i have a body kit but i'm going to the stock rocker panels and i'm getting rid of the dumb wing and i'm also buying the california special rear bumper. i"m keeping the hood and the fron bumper cuz it looks nice i think.

Lose the hurst and get the MGW, 305/40/18 with the 255/45/18's gives you a 27.00 dia on the front and 27.72 on the back, wait on doing the uca you don't need it yet. I recommend the nittos for street and occasional track. 4.10's are a plus. Twin disc is probably overkill until you go FI.

If you go with a 305/45 tire, you'll be increasing the overall height of the tire by over an inch. In effect, this will off set your gear ratio, i.e. the 4.10's will be more like 3.73's.

If you go with a 305/40/18 tire, the increase in height is less than half inch.

I have 285/40/18's on the back with 4.10 gears and drive around 75mph highway at 2,750 rmps.

wow u guys are fast!! lol. i'm getting replies like its kool!. thanks everyone for reading my thread. It makes a lot of sense about the wheels diameter changing the gear ratio. So i'll hold off to the twin disc clutch and flyweel then. I jsut don't wanna need it and not have it.

I am a meaty guy with heavy bones on a convertible. I swear by the 4.10's with manual transmission. I would not have it any other way, particularly on a heavier set up (convertible and 200#+ guy)

my 2 cents

the tires wouldnt stick out and if they did itd b barley any, but 305's look sick, i cant comment on the cams as i havent looked into them since im a V6, but for the gears, it may sound louder when freeway driving, but if u take it to the tracks ul prob want the bigger gears, i like the sound of my exhaust and i do a decent amount of driving on the freeway, i usually dont cruise at that high of rpms though... the wide tires would go good with the 4.10's because alot of people complain about doin nothing but spinning there tires in 1st, but if you got a 305 setup then the extra traction would help u overcome that
