Default could a blown fusilbe link causes the battery cable to melt in half?

Hello everyone,
I was changing my alternator on my 05 gt. When I connected my negative battery cable I got a large spark and a puff of smoke. It arced and caused the cable to melt in half. Any ideas. battery was connect right and alternator as well. All interior was turned off. I have an aftermarket stereo and amps(Pioneer Z1 and JL and Arc amps) Stereo amp fuses look ok. Why the hugh spark?

Thanks
David

Wow! Melted the battery cable in half? You had to of had some kind of direct short. Man, that would take about a zillion amps. I'm glad YOU"RE OK. Is your Mustang still OK?

Do you have a big ol 20 farad thumper cap for your JL?
Did you properly pre-charge it? That will cause mundo
instantanious amps and burn any fusable link in half.
Where is the JL stuff hooked up at?
Directly at the battery, at the alternator, at the starter
or at the BEC under the hood?
A pic or 100 of this shorting set-up and more discription will be
needed for an over ithe internet, never seen, diagnosis....

how big was this spark? When putting back on cables you can get some normal sparks but that doesn't mean anything is wrong. Check the resistance from the cable on the battery to the alternator and fuse box under the hood.

your new alternator might be shorted internallyif it blew that fusable link. the only way to melt a battery cable in half is to have a direct short to ground.

Bench test the alternator and it passed.
