Not everybody appreciates large wheels (especially those with an overly busy or flashy design) - they tend to draw the eye from the rest of the car. And once you're staring at the wheels, in most cases it's hard not to notice that the OE rotors look undersize.
If 20's are an absolute "must-have", I'm pretty sure that a simple wheel design plus a big brake kit would "age" better.
FWIW with respect to 18's, a 3500 lb 2+2 car with brakes up to about 13" doesn't really need even 18's, nor do the tires need to be 27" tall. 275/40-17 is already a pretty big tire, and if that's not wide enough there's 315/35-17 at about the same diameter.
FWIW #2, I have the OE 18's, but it's more in spite of their size than because of it. Mostly because it was easier to compromise up an inch on the wheel diameter than up 5 points on the tire profile and narrower by half an inch on the wheel width.
