That's why you put it in a box or container.
It was wrapped in a towel. Probably wouldn't have tipped over if it was a car battery. Those lawn mower batteries seem to have a higher center of gravity and therefore more prone to tipping. And, yeah I think the baking soda did the trick. Also pulled up the carpet. The bottom of the carpet and metal look like new.
