Need radar detector help

That's exactly what I had before I got the 9500IX. Great detector. Worked wonders for me as well. Passed it onto my dad when I upgraded, he loves it. (though he never really speeds anyway :P )

That's weird that I hear of so many people saying the Valentine is bad for false signals. For me, it has been great for that. I have a lot of stores I go past in my area, and the V1 is the only RD I've had yet that doesn't go off for any of them.
With so many Cameras being set up now, I can definitely see GPS being an advantage. V1 does need to start following the times a bit. As far as its radar and laser functions, it's awesome.

Veil is a passive countermeasure which reduces the laser's "punch thru" distance (the distance from you to the laser gun that the LEO can get a return strong enough to nail your azz) which MAY give you time to respond to an alert, IF you're fortunate enough to get one. The problem with laser is that even at about 1000 feet, the beam spread is only about 3 feet and there's little to no backscatter like there is with radar. It's quite normal for the LEO to have you pegged from a reflection off your license plate, headlights or any other suitable reflecting surface and that your RD will never SEE the beam. Once again, the RD is a tool to be used in conjunction with your eyes and brain; let the fools ahead of you get nailed and be aware of THEIR responses and ALWAYS be visually scanning as far as you can see down the road.
As far as active laser jamming, not all laser jammers are created equal and there are more states that declare them illegal than the # of states that declare RD's illegal.

By the way, I never meant for my advice to be "concrete" or "final". I'm a consumer just like most others here, I've just done a lot of research in this subject. Nuke makes very good points, most radar detectors won't even alert you to a laser gun, the fact mine did in my story earlier I believe is a fluke. I got lucky. There really is no replacement for good common sense. If you make yourself a target, if you stand out, you're still way more likely to get pulled over. A RD is not a countermeasure, it is a tool to give you a warning. A laser jammer is a countermeasure, but like Nuke said they're not all created equal. In fact, as laser gun tech advances there are fewer and fewer laser jammers that can successfully jam a signal. Also, the number of states where they're illegal is increasing all the time.
Moral of this is just be smart and you're already more likely to get out of a ticket.

I can tell you from experience because I am a cop in New Orleans. Radar detectors work very well no matter what brand you get. 99% of radar used by police is Ka band radar and troopers and some local traffic cops will use laser. For officers with hand held instant on radar if you detector alerts the cop already has you locked. If the cops in your area use dash mounted radar the detectors will work great because the radar is always transmiting radar and when you get in range hes got you. Your detector should alert you well in advace of you being in range. As far as laser goes, the new LIDAR are very accurate and are all instant on and aquire the target very fast. If your detector alerts you for laser you have already been got. Also be aware that radar "jammers" are illegal in more states than detectors. If your state is a legal detector state it may not be a legal jammer state.
