How do you know it was the battery that fried the alternator? Just curious...

Exactly. Was the battery hooked up backwards?

That's not saying it can't happen if a battery shorts out; usually the fusible link would blow instead. In an couple older cars (not mustangs), we had cases where the battery and alternator went out together, suddenly, killing any attempt to start the car and unable to jump-start as well.

Given that the stock alternators aren't that great to begin with, and you're drawing a heavy load, I wouldn't put so much blame on the battery. Unless somebody else can chime in and say it was definitely the battery's fault, i'd just replace the alternator with a better one, double check all the wiring, and see what happens.

your battery did not kill your alternator. your electric doo dads fryed your alternator. if anything your optima allowed you alternator to live longer before it took a dump on you.

I agree.

The 2010 cars came with a Denzo which is a much better alternator unfortunately they aren't straight swap. It can be done but it needs to be modded with a different internal regulator hook up.

Been running a Red Top with the stock alternator (114,000 miles on the alternator) for about a year now and no issues yet. I would replace the alternator before you dump the battery as the alternators are known to be sketchy.
