It should be the button for the optional lighting package. If I am correct it only came on mustangs with the premium package and should light up each footwell as well as the cup holders. I think there are 8 colors available.

I have looked at pictures and have a 2006 in the family. None of them have a button there. Maybe an aftermarket trunk release or something?

You won't find that option on the 2007 Mustangs. Not sure about the '08s.

The 2009 mustangs have lighting like that just like the 10-12's? Aftermarket maybe? Someone help me if I am wrong.

It's the mycolor that changes the cupholder/lower lights on the car... Just an option for the 08-09s I believe.

Kind of supplements the dash's selectable color gauges, but I believe it was another option altogether.

08 I believe was the first year to have it as an option. It changes the color of the cupholder lights, as well as the footwells in front and back.

I don't think it's "ricerish" at all, quite the opposite. I love that I can personalize my car at the touch of a button. Blue's my favorite color, so that's the gauges and the lighting. My friends and I think it's awesome.

My girlfriend's brother changed many of his interior lights in his GTO to red to match the exterior, we both found it awesome that I could change mine that simply.

Oh yeah, looks really cool when you put a clear cup or water bottle in the cupholder

Yes, it's for the Mycolor lighting in the cup holder and down on the floor. That way you can match you're Mycolor dash with the rest of it. Unless you use a custom dash color. The cup holder and floor illumination is only preset colors.
