4.6 vs 5.0

4.6 vs 5.0
Which engine do y'all like more for the sound? Personally I love the way the 4.6 sounds after some headers, mid pipes, and axle backs.
I'm more of a sound/exterior type of guy than performance.
Which leads me to my next question, I'm stuck between buying a 2008-09 GT or a 2013-14 GT. LOVE the exhaust note on a 4.6 but I LOVE the body of the 13-14. If anybody owns both and can comment pros and cons of both, it'd be much appreciated

You can make either engine sound pretty much however you want (and if you want a lope, arguably it's easier to get certain sounds out of the 5.0 because of the Ti-VCT).

I've never owned a 4.6 Mustang, but I've heard plenty of them on the street and a couple at AutoX events.
I haven't heard anything I like better than my '14 with just Roush Axlebacks. It isn't really loud, but it's definitely loud enough to be heard, loud enough that I'm lighter on the throttle than I would otherwise be around LEOs.
It's just right in my opinion. Wouldn't want it any louder, which is going to be interesting because I do intend to add headers, hi-flow cats, and mid pipes in the future.

With the engine more or less "stock" I so far prefer the sound of the 4.6 (with an H pipe and chambered mufflers). But, that's because the 4.6 still uses the 5.0 HO/351W firing order, vs. the new 5.0 which uses the same firing order as the old Flathead (which I thought was odd), and I've always loved the sound of the 5.0 HO.
Also the new 5.0's make that weird "wub wub wub" sound at idle which I don't care for (but of course the ghost cam stuff can take care of that).

I have 4.6 with Flowmaster American Thunder axle backs my son has the 5.0 with Roush axle backs. I like the 4.6 better at idle and cruising but the 5.0 sounds better at wide open throttle in my opinion. Now that could be the different makes of axle backs. The Roush are louder than the Flowmaster for sure.

I think the 5.0 has a more "euro" sound to it, where the 4.6 has a more "American" sound to it. I don't think either sounds bad per se, just depends what sound you like more. I prefer the 4.6 sound, but like you I love the 13-14 body style; hands down the best looking 5.0 style so far.

I like the sound of my 5.0 w/the GT500 mufflers; to my ear, it's the way a Mustang is supposed to sound. It's subtle & tame @ cruise w/ZERO drone, won't scare the neighbors, yet ferocious when you get on it, w/a nice snarl.
But I LOVED the sound of my Bullitt's 4.6l w/the stock H-pipe & Steeda exhausts; IMO, it was the best sounding Stang ever. Deep rumble, great when on the gas but mellow @ cruise w/ZERO drone.
Winner- 4.6, close second, 5.0

Seriously either can be made to sound as good as you want. Stock, neither really sounds "great" though. Here's a vid of my 3-valve 4.6L based (bored and stroked to 5.15L)... the point being the complete exhaust was replaced, it's got big cams, etc., when stock it was hella quiet.

I've owned both... The 4.6 sounds better, full stop.
However having said that, the 13-14s are simply the better car. I do not think there is enough of a difference between the two motor's sounds (especially with an aftermarket exhaust) to justify the differences the upgrades the 14-14s represent.
