Default Higher Octane = Higher MPG???

Has anyone crunched the numbers when it comes to octane ratings and MPG? Does higher octane equal higher MPG? I ask as I am thinking of switching my BAMA tune to a higher octane (maybe 91 street or race) if it will get me better MPG. Right now I am only seeing about 24 MPG mixed 70/30 street/hwy right now.

And NO I do not drive like a bat out of hell. I am a slow driver compaired to most as I do worrry about the MPG aspect.

Thanks,
Matthew

Nope, unless the car is tuned for the higher octane or the engine is really worn and needs the higher octane to prevent preignition, higher octane does nothing for MPG.

Regular maintenance, proper tire size, air pressure, and a judicious foot on the throttle are the best way to get the best MPG.

Sigh, you guys really don't read or search do you? The engine is designed to take advantage of higher octane gas just like the 5.0. Expect to see 6-10hp just by switching from 87-93 octane. Yes you do get slightly better MPGs with 93 octane and you do not need a tune to do it.

I doubt you'd notice the change, IF any. And why would fuel mileage even come into play when you bought a performance car? And do you think that the additional how-ever-much per gallon for higher octane will actually SAVE in the long run IF you got an extra 1-2 MPG?

Get a good custom tune, gain some respectable RWHP and not lose any fuel economy.

You will see other people commenting on it from time to time, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who took time to document it. And no, you won't save any money, or much if anything at all. But it is nice to have the extra little bit of juice. Just by installing a JLT CAI and using 93 octane, I gained 16whp and 22wtq, and probably a little more in the midband. I think Bama claims something like 30wtq in parts of the powerband.

I use the 91 octane all the time but I leave my tune on the 91 setting too. I do drive for mpg at times when I travel when Im not in a hurry. Best mpg to date is 34.07! I dont go by what the computer in the car says, I fill up as much as it'll take before and after and do the miles/gallons division.

A benefit of 93 gas is that it burns cleaner & dose not leave deposits because of the additives. I hear 93 oct motors are very clean on the inside.
