k how come they bore the 408 instead of just keeping the pistons off the 351/302?

I have a 408 in my dirt track race car and its making 625 hp. I have a stock block,13.6 to 1 compression,RHS heads and a dual plan intake (Weiand Stealth) on it right now but will be swapping it out for a single plan next season to gain a few more hp.

If your bore the 351 it would be like making a 302 a 347. You will be messing with the integrity of the cylinder walls stroking it that high. Get a 390 and then stroke that but remember that there is no replacement for displacement.

RE: 408 or 427 stroker
i haven't heard of anyone having a reliable 427w as a DD. I'm leaning towards the 408w myself but since the price difference is only minimal I'm considering the 427w as my DD.
I'm more of a risk taker so i'll probably go the 427w route. I'm sure when that time comes I'll have alot to say.
