Tell me about your 408/410 build
Hey Guys,
I'm doing all the necessary calculations to build a solid 410W. I have a few parts that have served me well up to this point, so i would like to reuse as many as possible. But right now i am struggling to find the correct piston/rod combo that will get me close to my target. So let me tell you what i am working with.
'94 roller 351
bored 0.040 over
9.496 deck height
new 4.00 stroke crank (not yet purchased)
64cc aluminum twisted wedge 195 heads
.542/.563, 224/232 cam (Trickflow Stg 2)
Pump gas
The old parts made 346/353 at 8.3:1 CR in a 351 package...decent but i want MORE MORE MORE. With this new NA engine I would like to land somewhere between 10:1 and 10.5:1 CR. Everything i can find online in the stroker kits, or TW compatible pistons, are designed for more low CR boosted type applications (9:1 ish), or high CR race gas engines (11.5:1 ish). So unless i find the perfect combination of piston and rod to get me close, i will either have to order custom pistons, or compromise the package in some way. If you have any suggestions on this, please let me know. Otherwise, tell me about your 408, some of the ever important stats, and how happy you are with the resulting performance.

your 195 heads are on the small side for a 408 stroker.........most I see are bare min with a 205 head and up............I'd send your heads to fox lake and have them ported out and milled down for a smaller combustion chamber and have a custom cam designed for it....don't use a 302 cam which is what a tfs stage 2 is in a 408 stroker, or for that matter any darn xfi 347 stroker cam.....your building a 408 stroker not a 302 based one......use parts meant for a 408 or be prepared for a 408 that won't live up to expectations. for a cam.....www.flowtechinduction.com none else!

.
heres some mahle 16.0 cc pistons = 10.5:1 at .040" over
http://www.summitracing.com/search?S...wedge%20piston
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mle-twf165040i16
use 6.250 rods.
eagle rods are fine
here's a good off the shelf cam for this . . i would have comp grind it on a 112 lsa . . it is currently a 114 lsa . . it will have a nastier idle than the one you currently have and you should have at least 3.50 gears with it.

these rods are strong enough and are cheap . . check dimensions . . you can get new bushings installed for the .912" mahle piston pin.

Keep your heads, get a MUCH better cam, build a shortblock (stroker is optional... I'll personally never build one again)
Add a turbo or supercharger
Profit.
FWIW, my 351w is putting down 565rwhp at only 8psi from a tiny 70mm chinese turbo.

I'll look into a custom grind cam before the build goes together, but in the mean time i just need rotating components that will start the foundation.

Of course this is an enticing option, but i need a bottom end that will stand up to the punishment. This build should provide a good foundation for a boosted engine down the road. I'm thinking at that point i will install larger 205/215 heads, and switch over to fuel injection. This is actually already a side project i'm working toward.

I'm using AFR 205s..... It really depends on the head flowchart weather or not they are in fact too small if they are the new 11r heads use them. With a 18cc dish my car is 10.8:1. Custom cam from comp running edelbrock Vic efi 5.8 6.2 rod and 4 in stroke 4.060 bore.
