yep, unfortunately it's the nature of the gears because there is more spinning mass to stop turning with reverse (3 gears) as opposed to the forward 5 which have 2 gears each. The 3rd gear is an idler gear to transfer motion the other way.

On my 94 explorer with brand new tranny it ground reverse most of the time, and my buddy had a brand new firebird that ground reverse sometimes too.

yeah you'd be surprised what a fluid change will do. I put in cheap fluid for 500 miles to break in my new synchros, then drained and filled with MOBIL 1 and it drives even better.
