Royal Purple 5W20
I know this has been discussed before I just can't find it in past archives. I need to change my oil and I want to try Royal Purple 20 W50 but is it better than Mobil 1. I have always used Mobil 1 20 W 50 and it has been fine. Is Royal Purple worth the extra $$$$$$?

RE: Royal Purple 20W50
I actually just heard from a good friend who is most knowledgable mechanic I know that Royal Purple is not good. He continuosly takes new classes for advanced certifications and while at his last course his instructor told them Royal Purple is acidic. It actually eats away at some engine parts. Now I do not know if this is 100% true but I am going to continue to use mobil 1 instead of switching. My buddies car runs high 11's low 12's N/A and he still uses mobile 1.

I run castrol syntec 5w50. Works awesome, I personally havent had good luck with Mobil1 as it seems to break down faster than the syntec. Anyway's depending on where you live, Im sure the temp outside is gettin up there, I wouldnt recommend the 5w20. The ***** like water. At least run that 5w50, Ive run plenty of cars on this stuff on my ex's MGB after 4k miles the oil looked like I had just poured it in, still nice and golden. On my probe GT with 200K on it, after 2K it still looks clean, my brothers BMW 325is w/ 175K on it, still clean. Only run 20w50 on a race car, where the rpm's are gonna stay pretty high.
And the acidity of the oil eats away at the gaskets, not the metal engine parts.

royal purple is sponsored by a lot of knowledgeable companies and no one has found anything but success from their line of products. One mechanic that doesnt like it and starts spreading rumors does not mean that the oil is bad. Until someone shows me evidence of royal purple damaging an engine I'll believe all the other evidcence that supports it as one of the best performing oils out there.
