Default clutch problem?

Hello,

I drive a 96 GT - I love it. :-) But lately I've noticed that when I press hard on the gas (e.g. to get up to speed on the freeway) the engine revs OK but the car doesn't actually go any faster. The revs dip after a second or so and then the car does get going. It's a stick shift, is the clutch slipping...? It doesn't smell or make a worrying noise or anything. What sort of mechanical work needs doing, and how much roughly should I expect to pay?

Thanks,

Richard

your clutch must be slipping pretty bad if your stepping on the gas and your rpms go up but the car doesnt go any faster. Thats a good sign that you need a new clutch.

a good clutch will be about 250 and a flywheel could be the same price or a little more or less depending on what flywheel you get.

thanks for the reply! So are the clutch plates worn out then...can't I just replace those? How come I need a whole new clutch...?

I'll take it to the garage when I get back; they charge $30 hour labor...how long does it take roughly to do the necessary work...?

thanks,

Richard

if your car is stock or dont have much more HP than stock then you can get a cheaper clutch for around 150 and resurface the flywheel for a couple more bucks. It shouldnt take longer than a couple hours.

yeah it's got a special air intake and it's been lowered by 2" but nothing to drastically up the power output. Looks like I'm looking at under $300 then...not too bad. :-)

thanks!!

30.00 an hour for labor is cheap, thats half of what labor is where I am. i found a king cobra clutch on ebay for a little under 150 and then a resurface will be under 50.
and I think its takes around 3 hours to install it... someone correct me if its more.

I did it myself. I had the car apart a few weeks because I was doing other repairs. But time total spent on the clutch and stuff would be around 4 hours.

I bought the king cobra kit, and had my flywheel resurfaced for $44 at the local machine shop. Got the king cobra kit for $190 to my door from Summit racing.

Now I did this work on a garage floor, jack stands, with all hand tools. I know it is much quicker even with just air tools, and even quicker yet with a lift.
