Looking at a 1996 GT
Hey Everyone,
I posted this over in the New Member section, but I'm thinking it's in the wrong place.
So, I'm re-posting it here. Hopefully, this is the right area. Sorry moderators, if it's still the wrong area.
Here's what I said over there:
I've found a 1996 GT with 65,000 miles.
Here's some details on it:
FORD '96 MUSTANG GT --awesome black GT, 5 spd, 65K mi, Cobra R Rims and Nexen Low Profile Tires less then 1000 miles, Steeda Tri-ax Short shifter, Centerforce Dual Friction clutch less then 1000, K&N FIPK II, MSD Ignition Coils, MSD Wires, Bosch Platinum II.
I know some things about cars, but very little about Mustang's.
So my questions are:
Besides checking for leaks, engine burning oil, the handling -What are some things I should look for in my test drive?
What are some of the common problems with the 96 GT, if any? I've heard that the plenums are suspect, but I don't know if that's true.
What price should I shoot for? I'm thinking around $5,000.
Any help would be appreciated

$5000 would be very good. Sounds like a nice car, the only 'problem' is it's the NPI motor with the old cylinder heads/intake, so it's got only like 215 horse instead of the newer style 260.
Here is an idea, I paid 4500 for my 97 with 103000 on it at the time, and given me a fair amount of guff...
sounds like a deal, if you don't plan on being a hardcore racer it'll be a sweet car... and you can always upgrade everything you want to!

You may be better off finding a really high mileage car with good interior and paint and swapping the whole motor for a 99 or newer 4.6. But if you have the funds, that car sounds like a good starting point to do that with as well. You would be ok with that car for the price but as stated before, you will be slow for a mustang gt.

if you got that car of 5000 it would be a heck of a deal, i'd definetely do it, i bought my 96 mustang gt in june of last year for 6500 from a dealer, it had 96000 miles, clothe interior, didn't even have a cd player, and was an automatic, only thing done to it was shift kit and flowmaster catback, so 5000 is a heck of a deal for one with less miles, more stuff done to it, and it's a 5 speed, even though automatics come from the factory 1500 dollars more than 5 speeds more people wants 5 speeds so it makes them kind of hard to find

sn95s rock, go for 5 grand, itll be a steal. so what about the no-pi, if its too big of a problem a pi motor swap wouldnt cost more than 2500$ parts+ labor to have someone put it in, or about a grand for a slightly used pi motor and doit yourself. id jump on it if its clean and in good running order. check it out thoroughly though, only thing you should really look out for it the intake manifold. just check to make sure its got an aluminum corssover upfront. my 96 has had no problems, knock on wood, i did a motor swap but it ran like a top with 110k miles before that.

I know the 96 is the 'slow' Stang. But it's a project, so, I can have fun with it. If the motor is tight, and since it doesn't have that many miles, I probably could swap out the heads, add a cam, an aluminum intake, larger TB, exhaust and a few other toys, and I'd be happy.
