Default P0305 Generic Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

The "check engine" light on my 96 GT came on so I borrowed a code reader and the problem is:

P0305 Generic Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected

Is this serious? I.e. should I drive the car only to the garage? And is it expensive to fix?

Thanks,

Richard

yes get a tune-up. Its probably a spark plug or a coil

Hmm, I checked my service records and it had new spark plugs and "new, high performance wires" (whatever they are - same as a coil?) just 14 months ago. I haven't driven it that much. How long do these things normally last...?

Thanks!

Check the wires and plugs anyway. They might be faulty. I helped a guy put some new ones on his car a while ago and it had a missfiring cylander and we found that the wire was arcing to the motor at a spot where the coating was thin.

pull the plug on that cylinder. See if it has oil, carbon, etc or what is wrong with it. This will be a HUGE indicator of what kind of problem you have

yup, generally they will do that. Glad it wasn't anything more major

There came a 4.0L SOHC v6 explorer at the dealer... misfire like you described. Tested it out the wazoo, turned out it had a broken intake valve spring on one cylinder.... at 40,000 miles

Default P0305 Errors

Okay... I'm at the end of my rope.

Keep getting the P0305 error. Here is what I've done.

Replaced all plugs
Replaced all Spark Plug wires
Replaced the Ignition Coil
Replaced the Ignition Coil Connector
Intake Manifold Gaskets.

What else? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
