? about preperation for cams
Im thinking about getting some xe270s or vt stage 2 cams. I know and understand why you need to get stiffer valve springs for new cams but it also says that you should have steeper gears and a higher stall(i have an auto). Why is this and is it really necessary?

The steeper gears and higher stall are recommended because the more agressive camshaft grinds like the stage2 etc loose quite a bit of power around idle to say 2000-3000 RPM. The steeper gears and stall are to get you into the powerband quicker where you can take advantage of the cams.
IMO you should definatly get gears and a stall before cams on an auto car anyway, the gears/stall are going to net you much better results than any cam swap.

you will need notched pistons for those comp cams but you dont for the vt cams.

+1 on the gears. Right after I put my VT stage 1s in, I took it for a test drive (it was still N/A at this point) and I felt the need for gears even with those. Your going to lose a fair amount of low end power, but it worth it for the high rpm power and that amazing sound.
