As I stated in the beginning, I have eight new COPs and new plugs. I did clean the MAF. I took my car to the shop today for the dianostic. I found that I had two bad COPs. #2 and #4. Yes, theyare BRAND NEW. I replaced them myself directly out of the box.The guy at the shop has been working on Fords for twenty years. He checked everything including the injectors. #4 had over 400 misfires and #2 had 81 misfires. As the mechanic stated when I picked my car up,"I see a fairly low number of Ford COPs defective directly from the company". So keep that in mind when replacing your COPs and you still encounter a misfire. It's a good thing I did not throw away those old COPs. I need to go home and find two good COPs to replace the two bad while I send these back to the store. Which brings me to this question, Does antone know how to test COPs off the vehicle? I was told there is a way to hook them up to a machine and check the ohms. I will call Autozone. Thanks!

dumb question...can someone clarify what exactly a COP is? I just bought a shop manual and want to make sure my trouble shooting goes well.

Thanks!

simply put its the little plastic topped rubber neck thing that sits ontop of your spark plug, underneath your fuel rails. cop = coil on plug.

You can test the COPs by checking the resistance. I dont know the exact resistance (probably like in the kilo-ohm range) but you can at least check that its not shorted (0 ohms).

Also you can remove a spark plug, connect it to the COP, touch the electrode to a ground. Make sure you disconnect the injector for the cylinder you're working on. Then crank or start the engine. Then look for spark.

If all else fails, check out my post above ^^ and get a new calibration on your PCM at the dealer, per TSB 01-01-09, $80 (maybe you can talk him down). The tech at the dealer i went to said the same thing, the COP has failed on 2 cylinders.

COPs don't often fail... the dealer sends them back after warranty repairs only to have the supplier find that there is nothing wrong. The real cuprit is an improper A/F mixture, causing a misfire, because the PCM isn't doing a good job of adjusting the A/F ratio to current conditions. I think thats your issue bro... that was the issue on my car and since the new cal it runs great all the time.

Does any know if the 2002 Mustangs alread have this calibration? If not, I may consider having it done to mine to prevent future COP failures.
